Deep Tissue Massage in Nevada City & Grass Valley: Relief for Chronic Tension
Some tension comes and goes. Other tension moves in and stays: the shoulders that creep toward your ears, the low back that complains after a long day, the hips that feel locked after hours of driving, gardening or sitting at a desk. If that sounds familiar, deep tissue massage might be exactly what your body has been asking for.
I offer deep tissue massage in my private studio in Nevada City, just a short drive from Grass Valley. Here's how I approach it and what you can expect.
What deep tissue massage is
Deep tissue massage is slow, focused bodywork that reaches into the deeper layers of muscle and connective tissue. Rather than quick, surface-level strokes, I work deliberately, giving tight areas time to soften.
It doesn't have to mean pain. Good deep tissue work is about depth with care. I adjust the pressure with you as we go, because a body that's bracing against pressure can't really let go.
My approach: tailored to you, every time
No two sessions in my studio look exactly alike. Every deep tissue massage starts with your history and preferences: where you feel stuck, what your days look like, any injuries, and how you like your pressure. Then I do a hands-on assessment to feel what your tissue is telling me that day.
From there, the session moves fluidly to wherever your body and nervous system need it most. One week that might be your neck and shoulders. Next time, it might be your hips and legs. I'd rather follow your body than follow a script.
Who tends to benefit
Deep tissue massage can be a good fit if you:
Carry chronic tension in the neck, shoulders, back or hips
Do physical work, outdoor work or lots of driving
Sit at a desk or screen for long stretches
Feel like lighter massage doesn't quite reach what's going on
Want a regular, grounding way to take care of your body
Many clients find that regular deep tissue work helps them feel looser, move more easily and feel calmer in their bodies. Everyone is different, and I'm always honest about what massage can and can't do.
Deep tissue or Ashiatsu?
I also offer Ashiatsu, a barefoot massage where I use my feet and overhead bars for broad, flowing pressure without the sharp poke of elbows or thumbs. Deep tissue tends to be more targeted, while Ashiatsu is wonderful for full-body release. If you're deciding between them, read Ashiatsu vs. Deep Tissue Massage: Which Is Right for You?.
Please check with your doctor if...
Deep tissue massage uses firm pressure, so please check with your doctor before booking if you're pregnant, recovering from a recent injury or surgery, have a history of blood clots, or have a health condition where deep pressure might not be appropriate. Tell me about your health during our conversation before the session so I can adapt.

My studio is at 101 Providence Mine Rd, Building 101, Suite 103B, Nevada City, the first building on the left when you drive in. It's easy to reach from Grass Valley or anywhere else in Nevada County. I'm open Thursday through Saturday, 12 to 8pm. I offer studio sessions only, focused on deep tissue and Ashiatsu.
Support between sessions
Chronic tension tends to build back up between visits, so consistency helps. My Rejuvenation Ritual monthly membership includes $20 off sessions and a personal Self-Care Plan with custom stretches, strength and breathing exercises, so you have simple tools to care for your body at home.
Frequently asked questions
Will deep tissue massage hurt?
It may feel intense in tight areas, but it shouldn't feel like too much. Tell me anytime and I'll adjust.
How long should my session be?
If you have several areas of tension, 90 or 120 minutes gives us room to work without rushing. Sixty minutes is great for focused work.
Is it normal to be sore afterward?
Some people feel a little tender the next day, similar to after a workout. Drinking water and resting can help.
Do you offer mobile or in-home massage?
No. All sessions take place in my private studio in Nevada City.
