Ashiatsu vs. Deep Tissue Massage: Which Is Right for You?
The two services I offer in my Nevada City studio are Ashiatsu and deep tissue massage. When people book for the first time, one of the most common questions I get is, "Which one should I choose?" It's a great question, because they share a lot, but they feel quite different on the table. Here's how I explain it.
What they have in common
Both Ashiatsu and deep tissue massage are focused, therapeutic sessions for people who want more than a light, gentle rub. In both, I start with your history and preferences, then do a hands-on assessment so the work goes where your body needs it most that day.
Both are also offered in the same lengths and prices: 60 minutes ($140), 90 minutes, my Signature Session ($180), or 120 minutes ($220), with gratuity included.
How Ashiatsu works
Ashiatsu is barefoot massage. I hold overhead bars for balance and use my feet to give long, broad, flowing strokes. Because the sole of the foot is wide and soft, the pressure is spread out, so it can feel very deep without the sharp poke of elbows or thumbs.
Ashiatsu shines across big areas of the body like the back, hips, glutes and legs. The rhythm is smooth and continuous, and it often feels like a full-body melt. (New to it? Start with What Is Ashiatsu? Barefoot Massage in Nevada City, CA.)
How deep tissue massage works
My deep tissue sessions are hands-on. I use my hands to work slowly and specifically, moving fluidly to wherever your body and nervous system need attention. That precision makes deep tissue a lovely choice when there's a particular area calling for focused care, like a tight neck and shoulders, a stubborn spot near the shoulder blade, or tension that tends to settle in one place.
Deep tissue can be strong, but it doesn't have to be intense. I work with you, adjusting pressure as we go so your body can soften rather than brace.

Which one should you choose?
Here's my honest, simple guide:
Choose Ashiatsu if you love deep pressure, often feel like massage "doesn't get deep enough," or want long, flowing strokes that help your whole body let go.
Choose deep tissue if you have a specific area you want me to focus on, prefer the feel of hands-on work, or are newer to deeper work and want a little more precision.
Not sure? Book whichever feels most inviting, and tell me what you're hoping for when we talk at the start. I'll always tailor the session to you.
You are always welcome to alternate between the two, depending on what your body is asking for that month.
A note on safety
Both styles involve deeper pressure. Please check with your doctor before booking if you're pregnant, recovering from a recent injury or surgery, have a history of blood clots, or have any condition where deep pressure might be a concern. And let me know about your health when we chat before your session.
Making it a ritual
If you'd like to come in regularly, my Rejuvenation Ritual monthly membership includes $20 off sessions and your own Self-Care Plan, with custom stretches, strength and breathing exercises to support your body between visits. Members can choose Ashiatsu or deep tissue.
Frequently asked questions
Is Ashiatsu deeper than deep tissue?
It can feel deeper because I can use body weight with a lot of control, but it's spread over a wider area. Deep tissue can be just as strong in a smaller, more specific spot.
Can I switch styles from session to session?
Absolutely. You can choose whichever fits what your body needs that day.
Which is better for first-timers?
Either works. If you're unsure about deep pressure, deep tissue lets me be very precise. If you love depth, Ashiatsu is a wonderful place to start.
Where are you located?
My private studio is at 101 Providence Mine Rd, Building 101, Suite 103B, Nevada City, the first building on the left as you drive in. It's an easy drive from Grass Valley. I'm open Thursday through Saturday, 12 to 8pm. All sessions are in the studio.
